Truck Kills Bicycling 13-Year-Old
A 13-year-old Maspeth boy was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on August 2 as he tried to cross Fresh Pond Road on his bicycle.
Ferderich Enbre was riding his bicycle across the intersection of Fresh Pond Road and Eliot Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. when he was knocked over by the truck. The boy was pinned under the back wheel of the truck and his bicycle “swallowed” by the wheels, police said.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene worked for almost half an hour to free the boy from the wheels of the truck. The teen was rushed to Wyckoff Heights Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The truck driver did not see the boy crossing the intersection, but stopped immediately after the accident, eyewitnesses said. The driver remained at the scene and was issued three summonses, one for operating the 18-wheeler off a truck route and two for equipment violations, police said.
An eighth grader at I.S. 73, Endre loved riding his bicycle and videos and music. Endre was on his way to a nearby Pet Palace store to meet a friend and go bike riding, family members said.
Police said the driver would not face any criminal charges in the incident.
