Astoria Power Plant Evacuated After Steam Blast

By Liz Goff

A steam explosion Tuesday, August 10 at an Astoria power plant resulted in an evacuation of the area, fire officials said.

The 10 a.m. explosion in an underground generator at the plant at 18-01 20th Ave. was described as “minor” by an FDNY spokesperson.

Five firefighters were decontaminated at the site for possible exposure to asbestos resulting from the explosion. There were no injuries, the spokesperson said.

Representatives from the city Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and investigators from the city Department of Buildings remained on the scene throughout the day to determine the condition and safety of the site.

The site will remain closed until both agencies have determined the cause of the blast and give the site a clean bill of health.
