TWC Awards $30 K In Scholarships To Local Grads
Time Warner Cable scholarship winner Zhifan Yang posed with Regional Vice President of Public Affairs Harriet Novet at the TWC scholarship breakfast honoring recipients. Time Warner Cable’s NYC Region awarded $30,000 in scholarships to 10 “Class of 2010” high school graduates selected from within the company’s service areas in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Western Brooklyn, Mt. Vernon, Hudson Valley and Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey. Each Time Warner Cable Scholarship recipient received $3,000 to aid the costs of pursuing a higher education.
Zhifan Yang of Elmhurst was one of the 10 recipients of the 2010 Time Warner Cable Scholarship Program. Yang was president of the Newtown H.S. Chess Club and a member of the Math League and the National Honor Society. He was also inducted into Mu Alpha Theta, a Mathematics Honor Society. Yang has volunteered at the Newtown Church and at the Queens Library. This fall, he will major in biomedical engineering at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
For the first time since the inception of Time Warner Cable’s Scholarship Program in 2000, Yang and other applicants had to display an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”) or show participation in the community or school activities involving STEM. This focus ties in to the company’s Connect a Million Minds® program, a fiveyear philanthropic initiative created to inspire
young people to build the skills needed to become the problem solvers of tomorrow and to pursue careers in STEM-related fields.
“Time Warner Cable is committed to utilizing our resources and raising awareness about the importance of education, particularly in STEM –science, technology, engineering and math–an area of study in which our country is lagging. Our students need math and science skills to successfully compete in this highly competitive marketplace and to be able to meet the requirements for jobs that are essential to our country’s future,” Time Warner Cable NYC Region Regional Vice President of Public Affairs Harriet Novet said.
Yang and the other local high school graduates attended the company’s scholarship ceremony to celebrate their achievements and successes today.
Since the program began in 2000, almost $450,000 has been distributed to local college bound students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, community involvement and academic performance. The scholarships program is exclusive to children of Time Warner Cable customers who plan to attend any accredited four-year college or university in the USA.
“These young adults, who are headed to prestigious colleges and universities including Cornell, Harvard and Brown, represent our future. We’re honored to be investing in their educational journey today in order to make a difference for tomorrow,” added Novet.
As well as Elmhurst, this year’s scholarship recipients represent areas including Lower Manhattan; Greenpoint, Brooklyn; Staten Island; Leonia, New Jersey; Montgomery, Hudson Valley and Mt. Vernon. Students plan to pursue higher education with majors ranging from biomedical engineering and chemistry to neuroscience.
