Driver In Wrong-Way DWI Crash Dies
The airport shuttle van driver critically injured in a July 5 crash with a wrong-way drunken driver on the Long Island Expressway lost his fight for life last week.
John Rey, 64, of Hempstead, died of multiple organ failure following “weeks of unthinkable pain”, his daughter said.
Dave Richards, 30, had a blood alcohol level of .19, more than double the legal limit, when he slammed his silver Mercedes into the airport shuttle van, police said.
The Mercedes burst into flames at the impact, as did the van. Firefighters pulled both drivers from the burning vehicles.
Richards was initially charged with vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.
A spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said prosecutors will ask a grand jury to upgrade charges against Richards to include vehicular homicide.
