Bayside Blaze Victims Allege Items Missing After Cleanup

By LIZ GOFF

Angry tenants forced from their Bay Terrace apartments by a July 7 fire are steamed up over the loss of artwork, electronics, jewelry and antiques they say were looted or lost during a cleanup of the premises.

“My clients’ things have been destroyed and missing,” attorney Herbert Waichman said. Waichman, who is representing some of the displaced tenants, said Several of his clients noticed the items were missing the day after the blaze when city fire marshals escorted them into the apartments to gather their belongings.

Cleaning crews hired by the building management company began clearing out debris after the city Department of Buildings issued a full-scale evacuate order, barring anyone from entering the apartments.

Tenants said they believe the Ciampa Organization management company should be held accountable for their losses.
