Monserrate: Let Me See My Girlfriend
Former state Senator Hiram Monserrate will be back in a Queens courtroom this week, asking a judge to lift an order of protection that keeps him from contact with the girlfriend he was convicted of abusing.
Justice William Erlbaum last year found Monserrate guilty of misdemeanor assault in a slashing attack on Karla Giraldo, the girlfriend the ousted senator was seen dragging from a Queens apartment building two years ago.
Prosecutors argued Monserrate should not have contact with Giraldo, who testified that Monserrate didn’t mean to hurt her.
Prosecutors plan to oppose Monserrate’s request for the court to shave off half the time he must spend in domestic violence counseling, a part of his sentence, and will ask Erlbaum to order a hearing on whether Giraldo wants the order of protection lifted.
Rumors surfaced earlier this year that Monserrate had “dumped” Giraldo, who failed to seek counseling after the attack left her bloodied and scarred.
