Mythos Fine Greek Cuisine
colored walls. The rich wood floors are beset with tables dressed in starched white linens. No wonder so many families and groups of friends choose to dine at Mythos, located on Northern Blvd. in Flushing.
Owner Paul Theodoropolous is there to ensure a superior dining experience and knows many of his customers by name. While some Greek restaurants specialize in either meat or fish dishes, Mythos offers the best from the land and the sea, with lots of house favorites, such as the grilled baby octopus, which is so tender and gently charred from a pass on the grill. Tiny sardines, marinated in extra virgin olive oil and vinegar are so tasty when placed on slices of warm bread. Spread on their delicious dips, such as melitzanosalata, taramasalata and creamy tzatziki. Carla, our lovely waitress, brought us a complimentary bean salad that was delicious. Gigantes are big lima beans with a buttery taste, cooked with delicate herbs, tomato, carrots and celery for a healthy appetizer or side dish ($8.50). Mythos’ stuffed grape leaves are some of the finest around, served warm with wedges of fresh lemon ($9). Chunks of flaky codfish are dipped in batter and fried golden brown, then served with garlicky skordalia dip. The generous meze combination platter includes grilled Greek sausage, cubed, marinated pork with Kasseri cheese and peppers and will feed 2 to 3 people as a first course ($13.50). Large bowls of fresh salads can also be shared, such as the horiatiki salad, with red, ripe tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and creamy feta cheese.
We sipped on the house red wine while the grill chef prepared a whole Mediterranean sea bass for me. Dressed in olive oil, lemon and herbs, this fish was so flaky, tender and full of flavor. My companion enjoyed a generous platter of juicy scallops sautéed in butter and garlic sauce, which was the evening’s special, served with yourchoice of lemon potatoes, rice or French fries. I can’t say enough good things about their golden lemon potatoes. Fresh dandelion greens called “horta” was the perfect accompaniment.
The refrigerated case in front displays prime steaks, lamb chops, souvlaki and more. Baby lamb chops are seasoned with mild herbs and cooked just long enough to retain a rosy color in the middle. Lean veal chops and pork chops are juicy and tender, or you can enjoy a sirloin strip steak sizzling from the charcoal grill.
Classic Greek dishes including rabbit stew, pastitsio, moussaka and grilled quail are great choices too. A private party room is available that can accommodate up to 130 people for a shower, engagement party or business function. You’ll see families and friends here all the time, so make reservations on weekends.
The baker at Mythos makes a delicious galaktoborekia,
a pastry layered with custard and honey that is out of this world. There’s also baklava, tartufo ice cream and sorbetto to finish your meal along with a cup of Greek or American coffee.
Mythos is open seven days a week with lunch served Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm at reasonable prices. Dinner is served until 11 pm on weekdays and on Saturdays and Sundays, dinner is served all day, so make it a family affair. They offer take out delivery as well.
