Harbor Cops Rescue Runaway LaGuardia Pup
A frightened dog that escaped from the cargo hold of a Continental Airlines jet at LaGuardia Airport on June 17 is back with its frazzled owner, a little damp but otherwise healthy, a Port Authority spokesperson said.
The rare breed dog, perro de presa canario, bolted from the jetliner at about 2 p.m. on June 17 and led Port Authority police and personnel on a run around airport runways that ended when the pup jumped into Flushing Bay, Port Authority spokesperson Spencer Schrage said.
Continental Airlines personnel tried to capture the dog as soon as it escaped, but the pup just wouldn’t stop running.
Police assigned to the NYPD Harbor Unit jumped into the Bay and rescued the pup, who was turned over to Continental Airlines personnel.
Port Authority personnel returned the dog to its owner hours after the rescue, authorities said.
