Pitaria...Fresh and Tasty
Pitaria offers fresh and tasty meals to go or to stay, where you can eat in their brand new, sparkling clean dining room decorated with retro black and white floor tiles and photos of Manhattan scenes on the walls. Owners Nick Gregoriou
and John Kotrozos opened Pitaria just three months ago after nearly 40 years of success at the landmark restaurant, Pinocchio Palace. All the beloved recipes for their fabulous food, including their famous pizza, gyros, steaks, Greek specialties and salads have come across the street for all to enjoy.
The place was buzzing with families eating together, couples grabbing a bite after work and a queue of customers placing orders to go. The phone rings off the hook with orders for the crispy crust pizza with fresh sauce, cheese and all your favorite toppings. There’s a special on souvlaki sticks that can’t be beat. Choose either tender chicken or pork chunks, marinated in their special seasonings then charcoal grilled to a juicy finish for just $1.99 each or 3 for $4.99, served with bread to catch all the succulent juices.
Everything is made in house with fresh ingredients, so you’ll want to start with some of Chef Helen’s delicious Greek dips. I’ve never tasted such light, fluffy taramosalata, made from caviar and special seasonings. Tzatziki yogurt dip is thick and creamy and their hummus and tahini are smooth and taste great when spread on the warm pita bread brought to the table. Grilled calamari, house made spinach pie and stuffed grape leaves are other Greek appetizers worth trying, but the buffalo wings and chicken tenders are also perfect for sharing. The Pitaria signature salad is popular for its combination of tender greens, juicy tomatoes, sliced avocado and balsamic vinaigrette dressing that is presented in a generous white bowl ($5.95). Add grilled chicken, shrimp or salmon to this dish and it becomes a healthy lunch or dinner.
Pitaria pizza is some of the best around, noted for its tender, crisp crust, house made sauce and fresh cheese. Top yours with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms or any of their 24 toppings. Calzones are big and golden brown, filled with fluffy ricotta cheese and your choice of fillings. The house made olive rolls are flecked with juicy black olives and are hard to resist. They offer quick delivery to your home or office and even have “curbside delivery” so you don’t have to park. Plan your next party menu with Pitaria.
The chef at Pitaria prepares the meat each day for the variety of souvlaki, gyro and doner sandwiches and platters. The sandwiches are made with regular or whole wheat pita piled high with tender slices of
these succulent meats, which include lamb, beef, chicken and pork. Loukaniko, handmade country sausages, or Sheftalia, Cypriot style sausages go so well stuffed into a sandwich with lettuce, tomato, red onion and your choice of sauce ($4.95) . I chose to have my savory doner kebab served on a platter, which comes with a side salad, golden French fries or seasoned rice, and creamy tzatziki sauce with lots of pita bread to soak it all up. A glass of house wine or cold beer complement your meal, and there is a full array of soft drinks. Harry, a regular customer and amiable gentleman, “likes it all” and eats here nearly every night on his way home from work.
Entrées such as Greek moussaka, pastitsio or roasted chicken oreganata, with fabulous lemon potatoes make a hearty, satisfying dinner, to stay or to take home. How does a juicy rib-eye steak sound, served sizzling from the grill, or pork chops, lamb chops and even omega-rich salmon steak? These economically priced entrées come with lemon potatoes or rice and a cup of homemade soup or salad. There are even some Italian pasta favorites that allow you to choose your pasta and sauce to make sure everyone gets his favorite. Spaghetti carbonara is creamy and decadent with a hint of smoky bacon ($8.95).
At lunch time or anytime, a juicy burger with your favorite toppings such as bacon, cheese or mushrooms always hits the mark. The Pitaria burger has sizzling grilled onions, mushrooms, feta cheese and guacamole for an extra kick ($5.75). Burgers are cooked to order and start at just $4.25 and just $1.95 more to make it “deluxe” with fries, lettuce and tomato. Pitaria’s international wraps and Panini include the healthful vegetarian with grilled vegetables, the chicken Caesar with tender grilled chicken breast and salad, and the Little Italy wrap with chicken, prosciutto and mozzarella. For a taste of Tex-Mex, try the quesadillas, filled with jack cheese and your choice of chicken, steak or veggies, all grilled to crispy, melted perfection ($5.95).
For dessert, you must try Helen’s creamy rice pudding with a touch of cinnamon. Baklava, apple cake and classic cheesecake make an excellent finish to the meal. Visit Pitaria on your way home, located practically downstairs from the 30th Avenue train station, or just call in your order for fast free delivery ($10 minimum) or wait outside for curbside delivery. Plan your next party with Nick and John who will happily cater any event. For delicious pizza, gyros, steaks, Greek specialties and salads all served in a friendly place, Pitaria is your next stop.
