Greek Independence Parade Set For April 18
On Sunday April 18 the 72nd annual Greek Independence Day Parade will celebrate Hellenic heritage and freedom and commemorate the 189th anniversary of Greece’s declaration of independence on March 25, 1821.
The parade, a New York City tradition since 1938, attracts a vast number of New York marchers and participants. It is the culmination of a month-long celebration of Greek heritage hosted and organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. Dinners, a White House gathering, a beauty pageant, City Hall celebrations, a ceremonial flag raising and numerous other activities all lead up to the parade on Fifth Avenue, commencing from the Pierre Hotel.
This year’s individual Grand Marshals are Ernie Anastos, Philip Christopher and United States Marine Corps Reserves Colonel Matthew Bogdanos. Honored for his dedication to the Greek-American community, Anastos, New York City FOX network TV-My9 news anchor, has headed broadcast booth coverage of the parade since it began television coverage in 2007.
Philip Christopher is the first Greek Cypriot ever selected as a parade Grand Marshal. The leading spokesperson regarding Cyprus, Christopher is president of the Pan-Cypriot Society and of the International Coordinating Committee on Justice; an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarch and a recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Award. He is on the Board of Directors of Audiovox Corporation and president and CEO of Personal Communications Devices.
Bogdanos, an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan since 1988, author of Thieves of Baghdad, in 2003, while on active duty in the Marine Corps, led the investigation into the looting of Iraq’s National Museum, and was subsequently awarded the National Humanities Medal for his efforts.
The co-chairs of the parade this year include the presidents of the two prominent Greek- American professional organizations in New York: George Tsioulias, M.D., of the Hellenic Medical Society and Mamie Stathatos-Fulgieri, Esq. of the Hellenic Lawyers Association. Both have expressed their enthusiasm for this year’s parade and pledged their support and that of their respective memberships to ensure the success of the parade.
The parade will air on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m. on Channel 9.
