Cardozo Drops PSAL Championship to Boys & Girls H.S.

Boys and Girls H.S., Brooklyn, came from behind to win 55-50 over Bayside’s Cardozo H.S. to take PSAL boys basketball title at Madison Square Garden (MSG).
Boys and Girls H.S. junior Michael Taylor, a former I.S. 93Q student, who grew up in Ridgewood and played basketball in the schoolyards of Queens was named MVP of the 2010 NYC PSAL High School Hoops Boys Basketball Championship tournament at MSG on Saturday, March 6.
Taylor led all scorers with 25 points, scoring 20 points in the second half, to lead the school’s Kangaroos to a 55-50 victory over Bayside’s Benjamin Cardozo H.S. Judges in the New York City PSAL boys basketball title game to win the Public School Athletic Leagues Boys basketball championship.
Five-time champion girl’s basketball powerhouse Murry Bergtraum H.S., Manhattan defeated John F. Kennedy H.S., The Bronx 58-35 to take home the New York City Public Schools’ PSAL championship. Bergtraum has been the only girl’s basketball program to ever win a PSAL Girl’s Basketball Championship in New York City.
Attending the game was Deputy Mayor  Dennis Walcott and Deputy Chancellor Santiago Taveras. Both honored the winners at the end of the tournament.
For the boys championship finale, Cardozo’s Judges came out storming and took a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter leading by 10, and 28-18 at half time making many at the Garden think that the Judges from Bayside would go home with the title, but Boys and Girls H.S. would not give up.
This game was one of two halves—Cardozo 24-8 dominating the first two quarters and leading 28-18 at halftime     but Boys and Girls High, shook off a poor shooting first half and 10-point deficit to out-score Cardozo 37-22 in the second half to take the PSAL citywide title 55-50.
The game was won on the Kangaroo’s rebounding, 42 to Cardozo’s 28, and the 24 turnovers committed by the Bayside Judges to only 12 for Brooklyn’s Boys and Girls H.S.
The game’s MVP, Michael Taylor, led all scorers with 25 points including 8-13 from the free throw line grew up in Brooklyn and attended I.S. 93 on Forest Avenue in Ridgewood.
Taylor said, “I started playing basketball at I.S. 93 in Ridgewood where I first realized that basketball was a sport I could play well.”
Fellow back court ace, Antoine Slaughter added 12 points and had four assists to seal the come from behind win. Ryan Rhoomes led the Cardozo Judges with 14 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Teammate Reynaldo Walters added 12 points and five assists.
Following his team’s loss Cardozo, Head Coach Ron Naclario said, “We had a really good team but they were a little bit better.”
To get to the title game the Kangaroos from Boys and Girls H.S. knocked off The Bronx Wings Academy in the semifinals 76-52 at St. John’s University’s Carnesecca Arena to reach the championship game for the third time in the last four years.
With this first-ever PSAL championship title Kangaroo’s Coach Ruth Lovelace, the first female coach to win the PSAL championship in New York City said, “It means everything to do it in the memory of the late and former Boys and Girls principal, Frank Mickens.” The team dedicated this PSAL basketball season in his memory.
