We The People Take 2nd Place At Albany Competition

We the People team placed second in the New York State Finals in Albany on March 6. The team, which includes members of Dr. Linda Steinmann’s Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics class, began preparing their presentations in October 2009.

The competition, which is sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, requires students to become experts on aspects of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The team members included Elisa Atamian, Brandon Baksh, Shanice Bedassie, Jehanne Belange, Rahul Bhasin, Tejal Desai, Eva Fan, Alexei Furs, Kellie Gergoudis, Prabhjot Grewal, Sujata Gupta, Jocelyn Hernandez, Ashraf Hussain, Ranbir Kler, Vincent Lai, Joanne Lee, Ivan Lesiv, Miranda Myers, Melanie Ngo, Vassiliki Papagermanos, Eilin Perez, Julia Pojawis, Yena Purmasir, Kristina Rodulfo, Jane Selegean, Joseph Spitaleri, Rebecca Suzuki, Christopher Wang, Jerry Yang, and Amy Yuan. Bobby Wanees and Kin Yam Tsoi assisted their classmates, but did not travel to Albany.

Assistant Principal of Humanities Susan Getting and Evan Vekios, Townsend Harris Class of 2007 and We the People alumni representative, also accompanied the team.

On Friday, March 5 before the competition, the team toured the State Capitol through the auspices of the Justice Resource Center. State Senator Frank Padavan’s staff hosted the students and arranged for a special visit to the state senate floor.
