Ben's Best
Today, son Jay Parker continues the tradition
his father started, by hand curing the finest cuts of corned beef, pastrami, brisket and tongue that make Original Ben’s Best legendary. You can eat in the clean, comfortable dining room, or place an order to go over the counter. It was a delight to hear real New Yawkers ordering “hot dawgs wit mustid” over the busy counter! Of course Ben’s delivers too and regularly caters events for hundreds of people, or to families enjoying a hassle-free holiday at home.
The wait staff is friendly and efficient, bringing over a complimentary plate of homemade, crunchy cole slaw and a variety of pickles. I started with classic Matzoh ball soup, served in a giant mug. The maztoh ball was lighter than air, floating in soul-warming chicken soup with noodles and carr ots.
Next, I wanted to try all the delicious meats so I requested a sampling platter….just a couple of slices each of their incredible house cured pastrami, corned beef, brisket, tongue and oven roasted turkey. Accompanied by a stack of rye bread slices and mustard, I made short work of these delectable meats. Of course most people order them piled high on a sandwich or sliced to take home. There are even “celebrity sandwiches” named for politicians, actors and retailers who frequent Ben’s Best. In true New York style, you should wash it down with a bottle of cream soda or celery soda for the ultimate deli experience.
Original Ben’s Best offers complete sit-down dinners as well. An Early Bird Dinner is served from 3-6pm, costs only $16.95 and includes soup, entrĂ©e and side dish. Have some chicken noodle soup, then choose among braised beef brisket, half roasted chicken, stuffed cabbage, which is excellent, or Hungarian goulash with noodles. Choose a side dish such as Old World kasha varnishkes, kugel, potato pancakes or vegetables. A slice of their famous apple strudel, chocolate layer cake or rugelach completes this delicious, economical meal.
With the cold weather upon us, a comforting meal such as the centuries-old boiled chicken in a pot will warm your soul, chock full of chicken, noodles, matzoh balls and kreplach, a kind of dumpling ($16.75). Boiled beef flanken in a pot is another classic dish, and one of Parker’s favorites. Meat loaf, tender Roumanian steak, smothered in sweet onions and rib-eye steaks are all delicious, served with hand cut french fries. There’s even a kid’s menu and don’t forget the famous kosher hot dogs and knishes.
Original Ben’s Best is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner or stop in and grab a knish or hot dog anytime. Original Ben’s Best does a brisk catering business, offering everything from sandwich platters with salads for a business luncheon or complete holiday dinners. Menus are
