Citi Field Sign Loses It Cover
Mets fans are hoping Citi Field can weather the storms this year. With Opening Day just a month away, fans are hoping the recent loss of a “C” from the signature sign at their new stadium isn’t a portent of trouble yet to come.
A huge piece of the Citi Field sign crashed into seats and onto the playing field at the new stadium on January 25, when a fierce rainstorm with 55 mph winds blew through Queens.
A plastic lens that covers the “C” on the Citi Field sign blew off in the wind, plummeting nearly 200 feet to seats below, team sources said. Another portion of the letter landed on the playing field at the year-old stadium. When the 15-foot-long, 35-pound letter crashed to the ground, it shattered, the sources said.
Sources confirmed that the manufacturer, Broadway National, is making another cover for the letter, while engineers are checking other signs at the stadium to make sure they don’t suffer a similar fate in high winds.
