Floating Hospital Staff Aids Haiti Relief Efforts
Floating Hospital employees (l. to r.) Long Island City Community Health Center Medical Director Dr. Shani Armstrong, Outreach Manager Cynthia Davis and Benefits Counselor Brandi Evans hold the donations collected in their Hope for Haiti campaign.
The Floating Hospital (“TFH”) staff at Long Island City’s new, full service community health center, is making a financial donation to Doctors Without Borders to support the relief efforts for the people of Haiti.
TFH President and General Counsel Sean T. Granahan, Esq. said he was “touched but not surprised by this response from the concerned and compassionate employees at the LIC main headquarters. Our medical, dental and mental health professionals completely understand the urgent need for even the most basic health care in Haiti to keep the situation from becoming worse”.
In addition to the financial support directly provided by TFH employees, the organization is donating essential medical supplies to assist Arm2Arm, Inc. This Connecticut-based, nonprofit organization was established in 2004 to feed, teach, protect and nurture the immigrant Haitian children of the Bateyes, Dominican Republic. A routine medical mission was already planned for January 28, prior to the devastation of the earthquake producing an even greater need for basic supplies. The mission will follow through with its original travel plans, but will now focus on caring for those injured in the quake.
TFH is contributing sterile water, disposable scalpels, gauze sponges, bandages, alcohol swabs, medical gloves and antibiotic ointment to help an estimated 100 patients.
With the support of Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, TFH received $1.3 million in grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand its services to the medically underserved residents of Northwest Queens with the opening of its newly renovated state -of-the-art Long Island City Community Health Center in October 2009.
