Astoria Community Responds To Haiti Earthquake

On Monday, January, 18, City Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. and local community leaders and Trinity Church members Jeremiah Frei-Pearson, Karla Mosley Frei-Pearson and Costa Constantinides honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by coming together to support those in need, collecting donations for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31-18 37th St., Astoria from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Items requested included batteries, flashlights, summer clothing in good condition, water, canned goods that can be opened without a can opener, sleeping bags, blankets, sheets, tents, and any other items that may be useful.  Canned goods that needed a can opener were donated to people in need at Trinity’s homeless shelter and food pantry. A call also went out for drivers to transport the items to the warehouse where the Haitian American Family Association of Long Island is processing and shipping them to Haiti.
Vallone will continue to receive donations at his district office, 22-45 31st St. during the week.  For more information about donations or ways to help, call his office at 718-274-4500.
