Townsend Harris Teacher Wins Science-Math Award
     Katherine Cooper, a science teacher at Townsend Harris H.S., a highly selective New York City public high school in Flushing, has been named a recipient of the Fund for the City of New York’s first annual Sloan Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics. The Sloan Awards recognize seven exceptionally dedicated and creative teachers who have achieved outstanding results and inspired students of all backgrounds and abilities to pursue careers in science and mathematics. Each awardee received $7,500–$5,000 for the teacher and $2,500 to strengthen each school’s science or mathematics program.

     Astoria retailers are hitching their hopes for a black Christmas (as in black ink in their ledgers) to an early shopping season, decorating windows and cutting prices to draw shoppers to put down their cash and plastic for holiday bargains weeks before the traditional shopping season begins.

Free Synagogue Members Start $500K Restoration
     The Free Synagogue of Flushing recently being named to the New York State and National Register of Historic Places couldn’t come at a better time. The synagogue has launched an ambitious campaign to raise $500,000 over the next several years to restore and renovate the sanctuary.

Crowds Turn Out For Queensbridge It’s My Park Day
      On Saturday November 7, citizens of Long Island City and Astoria joined with Green Shores NYC and the Friends of Queensbridge Park Committee for the semiannual, It’s My Park Day. Students from LaGuardia Community College also came to lend a helping hand.

      Washington lawmakers from Queens applauded the House passage of a healthcare reform bill last week, saying it was urgently needed by millions of Americans who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford health insurance.      Seek Developers For Willets Point The New York City Economic Development Corporation has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to identify developers for the first stage of the 62-acre Willets Point project in Flushing. At the same time, NYCEDC reported it had recently negotiated the acquisition of three additional parcels from private land owners in Willets Point.

UCCA Holds 4th Annual Halloween Party
      Halloween got off to a ghoulishly early start at the Central Lounge Restaurant in Astoria. On Friday, October 30, the United Community Civic Association of Astoria (UCCA) hosted its fourth annual Halloween Party with more than 600 children and adults, all in a vast array of costumes, in attendance. Central Owner Nick Neocleous, a member of the UCCA board, provided the venue.

      Whitestone based Transitional Services for New York (TSI), a comprehensive mental health agency serving Queens County, recently held a dinner gala in celebration of its 34th anniversary. State Senator Frank Padavan served as master of ceremonies for the event, at which Georgiana Reese, Edward Sadowsky and Dr. Ann Sullivan were honored.
