      Cold and rainy weather on the night of the Community Board 3 meeting October 15, held at the Louis Armstrong School, I.S. 227, appeared to keep board member and audience attendance down and led to a quorum question late in the meeting. A faulty sound system made some of the meeting hard to hear as well.

      Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his predecessor, Rudy Giuliani, have endorsed Peter Koo, the Republican candidate in the tightening race to succeed John Liu in Flushing’s 20th City Council District. Koo’s opponent is Yen Chou, who was the surprise winner of the Democratic primary in which she defeated four other candidates, three of them also Asian Americans.

      From all indications, the election for the 19th City Council District seat in Northeast Queens between Republican Dan Halloran and Democrat Kevin Kim on November 3 will not be decided until the final ballot is counted. NYPD Sting Nets Astoria Gunrunner
      A 30-year-old Astoria man was one of four defendants charged last week in an NYPD sting involving the sale of illegal firearms. Juan Leon was charged with taking part in an illegal gun ring that sold more than two dozen firearms to undercover cops over a nine-month period between August 2008 and April 2009, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
