Yankees Defeat LA Angels 5-2 and Qualify to Play Defending Champs Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 World Series in the Bronx

The Montreal Canadians have won 23 championships while the Lost Angeles Lakers have notched 15 championships. The Yankees prepare to add to their winning ways after defeating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in game six of the ALCS and beat the Angels 4 games to 2 to represent the American League in the 2009 World Series.
The Yankees sent veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte (1,0, 2.84) against left-handed Joe Saunders (0-0, 2.57) for the Angels.
The Angels drew first blood by scoring 1 run on two hits off Pettitte in the third inning, the only run they would scored while Pettitte was on the mound. They accomplished with a double by J. Mathis and a single by Bobby Abreu driving in Mathis.

The Yankees will be going on to face the Phillies in the World Series a post-season championship series that they have not won since defeating the New York Mets in 2000. They last played in the World Series in 2003 when they lost to the Atlanta Braves.Yankees manager Joe Girardi, " I think the biggest difference is we had players play big in the series. CC was huge for us. Alex wss huge for us.Mariano Rivera was guge for us," said Girardi.
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera contributed a six out save following good relief work by Joba Chamberlain.
This was Rivera’s 37 postseason save giving him more than twice as many as any other relief pitcher in the history of major league baseball.
Rivera pitched a perfect ninth inning getting H. Kendrix to ground out to Teixeira at First base, J Rivera to fly out to center field and pinch hitter Gary Matthews Jr. to strike out to end the game.
The wining pitcher was Andy Pettitte. Pettitte’s victory was his 16th in postseason play moving him past John Smoltz (15) giving him the major league record for postseason victories. Pettite is now 16-9 in postseason play.
Yankee third baseman, Alex Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 11 postseason games. A-Rod now has at least four more postseason games coming up to tie Manny Ramirez and Pete Rose who share the MLB record of hitting safely in 15 straight postseason games. The New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced at the post game press conference that CC Sabathia has been named the ALCS Most Valuable Player. Sabathia who appeared with his son was all smiles at the post game press conference. His choice for ALCS MVP was based on his 2-0 performances that included a 1.16 ERA in 16 innings of work.
