(L. to r.): CALDC Executive Vice President George L. Stamatiades, Assemblymember Jose Peralta, CALDC President, Julian Wager, Assemblymember Michael Gianaris and CALDC Executive Director Marie Torniali celebrate the screening of "WALL-E", the finale of the 2009 CALDC Movie Night in Astoria Park series. With a screening of "WALL-E" on August 17 the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition (CALDC) second annual Movie Night in Astoria Park series came to a close. A crowd that gathered on the Astoria Park lawn for the series finale hailed the hero of the 2008 blockbuster film, the last robot on Earth, who found love and flew into the galaxy to fulfill his dream.

The 2009 "Movie Night in Astoria Park" series debuted on July 13 with the screening of "Twilight", a love story that reaches deep into the lives of its characters. The free Monday night movies continued through the summer with big-screen hits, "Surf's Up", "Grease" and the 2008 blockbuster, "The Dark Knight", starring Heath Ledger in his Academy Award winning final role as Batman's arch enemy, the Joker. More than 10,000 children and adults packed the lawn at Astoria Park on each night of the 2009 summer series, sharing the fun and suspense of the free screenings made possible through the efforts of CALDC and funding provided by Assemblymember Michael Gianaris.

Gianaris welcomed the audience to the final presentation in the 2009 Movie Night in Astoria Park series, saying it was his distinct pleasure to sponsor these family nights and he would continue to do so in the future.
