The city Department of Transportation is partnering with groups citywide to bring some summer streets fun to neighborhoods in all five boroughs. On Sunday August 9, the DOT, Astoria Park Alliance, Green Shores NYC and Partnership for Parks hosted the first of three days of Astoria Water Walk. For five hours, people of all ages enjoyed a car-free afternoon on Shore Boulevard, which runs through Astoria Park alongside the East River as part of Astoria Water Walk, which continued on Sunday August 16 and concludes on Sunday August 23 and brings the DOT's successful Summer Streets program to Western Queens.

Astoria Water Walk was sponsored by The Rock Health and Fitness and Build It Green! NYC. Café tables and chairs set up on the usually bustling street provided a place to relax and enjoy views of the waterfront and two bridges. Belly dancing and fitness classes by The Rock kept event goers on their feet. Even the neighborhood's four-legged friends got involved, taking part in the Astoria Water Walk Pet Parade. The Curious Frog Theater performed a lively version of the Greek comedy "Plutus".

Other participating organizations include ARROW, the City Parks Foundation, the Council on the Environment of New York, the Greater Astoria Historical Society, the Long Island City Community Boathouse, the city Department of Parks & Recreation, Phoenix House and Transportation Alternatives, Queens Committee. Thanks for their generous support is extended to Da Franco Ristorante Italiano, R&R General Supply Inc. and Petland Discounts.
