114th Precinct Crackdown On Drunk Driving Begins

Astoria police officials last week issued a warning to motorists who party too hearty and get behind the wheel over the holidays.

Deputy Inspector Paul E. Vorbeck, commanding officer of the 114th Precinct, announced a zero tolerance crackdown on drunk drivers in the precinct over the upcoming July 4th holiday, including a series of undisclosed DWI checkpoints and increased enforcement by patrol and precinct highway officers.

"When we say zero tolerance, we mean zero tolerance," Vorbeck said. "Anyone caught driving under the influence of alcohol will be arrested and processed through the system."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the NYPD is aware that the July 4th holiday is a time for family barbecues, celebrations and parties that include alcohol. "That's why we constantly remind people to designate a driver who will see to it that everyone gets home safely," Kelly said.

Vorbeck said he and his officers are determined to prevent any alcohol-related tragedies in the 114th over the July 4th holiday.

"Motorists who drive drunk are not just breaking the law," Vorbeck said. "They are putting lives in danger."

Officers at the 114th Precinct have been trained to observe motorists to determine if they have had too much to drink, Vorbeck added. "If you're out there driving drunk, we will find you," he said.—Liz Goff
