      An estimated 3.2 million young people will turn 18 years old in 2009, making them the largest group of high school seniors ever. At the same time, job losses have reached 822,282 so far this year, more than twice as many as last year. Unemployment is expected to break 9 percent nationally soon.

Sears Calls For 'Vendor Free Zone' In Jackson Heights
      City Councilmember Helen Sears wants to make the quality of life for her fellow Jackson Heights residents as pleasant as possible. One way to achieve this goal, she says, is to create an area totally free of food vendors whose carts now crowd sidewalks and generally block access to streets.

Federal Employees 'Paid' Parental Leave Act Passes House
      Declaring, "Today we show that Congress doesn't just talk about family values—it values families," Congressmember Carolyn Maloney last week expressed satisfaction with the House passage of her landmark bill to give federal employees four weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

FIAO Holds Concert For Earthquake Relief
      On Sunday, May 31 in the auditorium of St. Joseph School, 28-46 44th St., Astoria, the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Queens presented a concert to raise funds for the Abruzzo region of Italy, which was devastated by a massive earthquake on April 6. Entire towns and villages that had existed for centuries were totally destroyed and lives lost.

Cops Bust Soft-Serve Would-Be 'Silencers'
      Police in Elmhurst last week arrested a trio of soft-serve thugs who threatened a Good Humor man and his ice cream truck. Cops said George Peralta, 27, Andy Arevalo, 23, and an unidentified accomplice boxed the Good Humor truck into a parking space on June 2, grabbed the driver's keys and warned him with threats to stay out of their way.
