Paul Vallone, candidate for New York City Council in the 19th District (Bayside), joined United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and other community leaders at a press conference regarding the swine flu outbreak at I.S. 227, the Louis Armstrong School, May 21. With the number of schools affected by the flu growing rapidly, parents and press sought answers. The UFT is working with the city Department of Education and other agencies to protect the health of the communities. The union has set up a hotline for every Community Education Council district in Queens, and is asking chapter leaders to report on the situation in their schools daily.
