Onorato Appointed To High Level Leadership Position

State Senator George Onorato, who with 26 years' service in Albany is the senior Democrat in the majority conference, has been appointed to a highlevel policy position by Majority Leader Malcolm Smith.

Onorato (D- Astoria), who is chairman of the Labor Committee, was appointed Assistant Majority Leader/Liaison to the executive branch.

In this new post, Onorato will serve as the senate Democratic majority conference's liaison to Governor David Paterson, with a particular emphasis on labor issues. Prior to being elected to the state senate, Onorato was a labor union official. The new position recognizes Onorato's seniority in the senate and his extensive knowledge of the relationship between the executive and legislative branches, the announcement from Smith said.

"Having known Governor Paterson as a good friend and senate colleague for many years, I am pleased that I will have the opportunity to work with him yet again in this new capacity," Onorato stated. "We have a great many challenges ahead of us, but I am confident that we will weather this economic storm and go forward to improve the overall future of our state."

Onorato also said he was "pleased by the confidence placed in me by Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, and I look forward to fulfilling my Conference leadership duties while serving the working men and women of New York state as chairman of the Labor Committee". Onorato has held leadership positions in the Democratic Conference since 1992.—John Toscano
