You'll feel warm and welcome as the staff at Jackson Avenue Steakhouse greets you at the door of this charming, historic building. Joanne, the effervescent bartender, mixes up fabulous cocktails and keeps the conversation flowing at the convivial bar. Her famous "attitude adjuster" lives up to its name with premium tequila, triple sec, cranberry and orange juices. "Raz Ma Taz" is a refreshing blend of raspberry vodka, pineapple juice and a splash of soda. Their "ultimate martini" is crisp and dry and the ladies still love the Cosmos. There's a Happy Hour, Monday to Friday from 5- 7P.M. with $3 well drinks. There's valet parking at lunch time and off-street parking in the evenings.
The front dining room features rich banquette tables, surrounded by an extensive display of wines, while the interior dining room features a crackling fireplace and stained glass for more intimate dining. A private party room accommodates up to 100 people for an excellent business event or private affair. Call now as dates fill quickly.
After selecting a wonderful bottle of Beaujolais, we tucked into some of the tempting appetizers on the menu. Maryland crab cakes are gently fried till crisp and golden on the outside, and burst with sweet, lump crab meat on the inside. Delicately seasoned, this generous portion of two crab cakes is meant to be shared ($12.95). I can't say enough about their succulent, fall-off-the bone barbecued ribs. Regardless of what I order for dinner, I always order an appetizer portion of ribs, just to savor their wonderful flavor. A pair of diners would also enjoy a platter of shrimp oreganata and baked clams, oozing with savory juices meant to be soaked up with the warm rolls brought to your table. Sesame crusted shrimp is a popular choice, served over baby spinach and soy vinaigrette. Cool weather calls for their hearty French onion soup, baked in a crock au gratin.
Moving on to the main event, the rib-eye steak is their signature cut, house-aged and cooked to your liking. This steak cuts and tastes like butter, but has a nice texture and rich flavor. Now, their famous rib-eye is available in two sizes: the regular 24-ounce ($38) and the 14-ounce ($24) for those with a smaller appetite, but still crave the best steak in town. A juicy 10-ounce filet mignon is hand trimmed and prepared with a fine béarnaise sauce while the 28-ounce, dry- aged Porterhouse still plays a leading role ($39). Some new items have been added, including "loaded skirt steak", which is tender and juicy, served smothered in roasted peppers, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. My dining companion and I shared a combination of grilled skirt steak and shrimp scampi which was cooked to perfection and delicious ($24). Jackson Avenue Steakhouse is a good value for your dining dollar because all of the meat entrées are served with your choice of garlic mashed potatoes, irresistibly crisp home fries, baked potato, French fries, rice, fresh vegetables or side salad. Additional side dishes are available and served family style for all to share. Mushrooms sautéed in wine, fabulous creamed spinach, sautéed broccoli and beer battered onion rings are just a few options.
If you don't feel like steak, the double cut pork chops are thick and juicy, served with organic apple sauce. New Zealand rack of lamb is broiled to your liking and drizzled with rosemary demi-glaze. Barbecued chicken can be ordered on its own, or paired up with those famous baby back ribs. Even the simplest herbroasted organic chicken is extra special here. The Jackson Avenue
Steakhouse is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday from noon and Sunday from 3pm till 10pm, featuring consistently great steaks, seafood, chops, salads and more. At lunchtime, try their melt-in-yourmouth grilled tuna steak, cooked medium rare and topped with applewood smoked bacon and lemon-caper mayonnaise ($15). The Argentinean skirt steak wrap is a popular favorite, as is the beer battered fish and chips ($11). Any time of day or night, an amazing "bar special" combines their famous half-pound burger with French fries, lettuce, tomato and a pint of Radeberger beer for just $8.95, to be eaten at the bar only.
