The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island recently recognized seven representatives of the Walter Kaner Children's Foundation for the foundation's generous gift of $25,000. The funds will be used toward the Share-A-Night program, which assists families with financial challenges. In honor of the Kaner Foundation's dedication and generosity, the house has purchased a decorative rock for the gardens located in the front of the building. The rock bears the inscription, "It's All About the Kids- Walter Kaner Children's Foundation".
"We are extremely grateful for this generous gift which will help the families that stay with us," Ronald McDonald House of Long Island President Robert S. Weitzner said. "It will help us to continue providing services and programs that will best serve families and their children."
In 1950, Walter Kaner, a journalist for several publications, including the New York Daily News, Queens Gazette and Long Island Press, founded the Walter Kaner Children's Foundation, an organization with the sole objective of helping poor, handicapped and mentally disabled children. Since then, the foundation has brought sunshine into the lives of more than 250,000 children in the New York metropolitan area. Kaner's journalistic legacy has continued, even after his life ended in 2005.
The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a "home away from home" for families who are caring for seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment in area hospitals. Located on the campus of Schneider Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island accommodates families in a warm and supportive environment. Since opening in 1986, the facility has served approximately 12,000 families from Long Island, the five boroughs, throughout the United States and abroad.
