To a generation reared on video games, iPods and computers, an old-school game like foosball wouldn't seem to have much appeal for children between the ages of six and 18. Based on the reaction to the donation of a brand new foosball table to the Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens by DirectBuy of Brooklyn & Queens though, the game is still a hit with today's youth- and their parents.
Made by one of the finest foosball manufacturers, the regulation-size foosball table retails for around $600. DirectBuy of Brooklyn & Queens Co-owner Michael Wiseltier delivered the table to the Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens, 21- 12 30th Rd., Astoria, where excited children eagerly awaited its delivery.
"To us, being a member of the business community here in Queens also means being a member of the community in general, just like our members," Wiseltier said. "So when we make a donation to a place like the Boys & Girls Clubs, we're not only helping out a worthwhile cause, but one that probably benefits our members, their families and their friends and neighbors, and that's always worthwhile."
The Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys & Girls Club is a non-profit organization that depends on the generosity and financial support of the community to help it fulfill its commitment to enriching the lives of individuals, strengthening families and building inclusive communities.
"We have a large group of kids that come to our activity center every day, so we are always in search of new activities for them," Mohamed Oukacine, Variety Boys & Girls Club unit director, said. "DirectBuy's generous donation of the foosball table makes our activity center that much more of a draw for school-age children and their families. Young people need to know that people care about them, and DirectBuy has shown them that."
The mission of the Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys & Girls Club is to provide children of all backgrounds with the skills and abilities that will develop in them the qualities of self-esteem and self-confidence, which they need to become responsible citizens and leaders. Open during the summer and after school, the activity center offers a range of fun and safe activities, from sports, theater and nutrition to leadership, drug prevention and photography.
