Flowers Are An Inspiration At Art-O-Mat LIC
BY TAMARA GASPARIAN

Sam Seawright, Musk Rose & Hanbane
Flowers are the key motif in Endless Inspiration: Flowers in the work of five LIC artists, an exhibition that opened on Thursday, May 15 at Art-O-Mat46-46 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City. The exhibition runs through June 22.

The artists' depiction of flowers covers a range of artistic approaches in which flowers are intensified, sexualized and personalized.

Artist Jaime Arredondo's massive flower covers almost the entire canvas with its wideopen petals and delicate beads of water. Laura Bell's rendition reminds the viewer of the continual cycles of human history, while Wendi Gueorguiev's ceramic pieces are intensely sexual sculptures. Barbara E. Leven's close-up photography reveals qualities of a flower that are not easily discernible to the untrained eye. Sam Seawright uses his flowers, painted with sharp lines on a soft tinctured background, as forms of communication.

Curator Tamar Gasparian-Chester, an Astoria resident, said, "Each artist has been inspired and has communicated their vision through a flower. We all see flowers differently, and I invite you to find your inspiration in them."
