Open Auditions For High School Musicians

York College will be holding their Summer Jazz Program auditions Thursday May 15 from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday May 17 from 9 a.m.-noon. Applicants will be expected to sight read, perform a piece, any style of their choosing, and improvise. Big band instruments, saxes, trombones, trumpets, piano, bass and drums will be given preference.

Those admitted to the program will receive a scholarship for 5 college credits and work with professional musicians in a big band setting.

Students must own or have access to their own instrument, have basic facility, and be able to read music.

Students will receive practical training in being a musician as well as private lessons and sectionals. Master classes will be given by trumpeter Ray Vega (Tito Puente alumnus) and Rachel Z (Wayne Shorter/Peter Gabriel alumna). In addition to a final concert, the Summer Jazz Program will perform at Louis Armstrong's House in Corona on Armstrong's birthday.
