Payout Disappointing
To The Editor:

The April 30th issue of the Gazette was full of many interesting and newsworthy items and I am eager to share my thoughts with my fellow Gazette readers.

I am greatly dismayed that Con Edison only will give $100 to compensate the victims of the power failure in the summer of 2006. This is an outrage. The pain, suffering, financial and emotional problems sustained are beyond the $100 that will be paid to each person. It seems that Con Edison is raising rates for all and caring less for those who pay their hard-earned money to sustain such a big powerful company whose CEO gets plenty of millions.

That is true of the oil companies and of GE and other power corporations in our nation and world.

The top gets the cash and the people on the bottom and in the middle are victimized. Why must we pay $4 a gallon for gas and $118 for a barrel of oil?

Where is our government?

Where is the outrage?

Also, I am in agreement with Mr. Blas about the post office. They are inefficient, lose mail, put the wrong mail in the wrong boxes, are discourteous while serving in the post office and seem not to care. The price of stamps rises while the quality of service decreases and declines.

That is true with the workforce today. It seems that the new workers want benefits and more money but work is not important to them. A good day's pay for a good and honest day's work used to be the motto. What happened?

I am glad that the seniors will be getting a bus shelter to protect them from the elements. They deserve that. I wonder why that did not exist previously since senior housing was built and demand protection for the most vulnerable element of our population, the elderly. Now, if the bus shelter will not be a target of vandalism is the question.

As we start a new month, may each of us do our utmost to change the conditions in our borough, our city, our nation and world.

A happy and healthy month of May to all readers. Thanks Gazette for a job well done in presenting the important news that has a major impact on our lives. Cynthia Groopman Long Island City
