Councilmember Katz Expecting A Baby In June

City Councilmember Melinda Katz, a longtime Forest Hills public official and Democratic leader, announced earlier this week that she is expecting the birth of a baby boy this June. The baby is her first child.

The unmarried official said she became pregnant through invitro fertilization using a donated egg and sperm to achieve a successful pregnancy following three failed IVF treatments.

Katz, who will turn 43 around the time she is scheduled to give birth, has been receiving fertility treatments since she turned 40. Prior to that, she said, she had been trying to conceive for several years, but was unsuccessful.

"I realized then that I needed help and used a donor egg," she explained.

The petite Katz is not showing her pregnancy except for a little "baby bump". She has always wanted to be a mother, she said, but has never found the man she wanted to marry. "But I'm sure that my decision to have a baby was right," she added. "I felt if I didn't make a decision now, I would regret it for the rest of my life." Up to now she has kept her pregnancy a secret, confiding only in certain people to whom she is close such as her rabbi.

Because of the several failed IVF treatments, she has been very careful, but still almost lost the child three times.

Since becoming pregnant, Katz has managed to keep up with her council duties and has even included several fundraising events in her schedule. Some time ago she announced plans to run next year for city comptroller, as her eight-year council career will draw to a close because of term limits.

Katz is looking forward to becoming a single mother and continuing her career in public service if she wins the comptroller's job. Although she has no significant other and will be raising her son on her own, she said she is confident she can rely on her friends and family for some support.

"I'm so happy with the decisions I made and hope everyone will share in my happiness," she said several times during a brief interview.- John Toscano
