DDPC Grants $35K To Elmhurst Hospital Center

The New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) has awarded a grant of $35,000 to Elmhurst Hospital, state Senator John D. Sabini (DI/ Elmhurst) announced.

The DDPC board members voted to award the grant at their meeting on March 13.

The funds will be used to continue the Parent Partners in Health Education Training Curriculum, which helps medical residents better understand disability issues through partnerships with caregivers and the community. This includes home visits by resident doctors to individuals with disabilities, as well as staff serving adults with developmental disabilities.

"It is critically important that we provide for disabled members of our community," Sabini said. "This grant is a big step forward for Elmhurst Hospital, our disabled friends and their families."

The curriculum also will feature a series of lectures and community agency interviews to increase sensitivity for and awareness of disability issues.

The DDPC is a federally funded state agency intended to help disabled New Yorkers and their families in areas such as employment, health, transportation and education.
