Queens Students Honored At Alley Pond Center
Councilmember James Gennaro, chair of the City Council Environmental Protection Committee and a former college professor, honored 99 students from Northeast Queens' School District 26 at an award ceremony at Alley Pond Environmental Center on March 29. The 29th Annual Arline Thomas Urban Bird Literary/Arts Celebration featured awards for students from kindergarten to the sixth grade in three creative categories: writing, crafts and visual arts. The event is named after a woman who was a licensed member of the National Audobon Society's bird-saving corps who spent 30 years of her life dedicated to the cause. Councilmember Gennaro, who has sponsored much of the landmark legislation that aims to make New York City one of the most environmentally sustainable cities in the world, told the kids that they are setting a great example for their peers. He also urged parents to become members of Alley Pond
