Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown
D.A. BROWN: CORONA MOTHER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER AND DEPRAVED ASSAULT ON SEVEN-WEEK-OLD CHILD
Defendant Faces Up to 25 Years In Prison

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced today that a Corona mother has been charged with attempted murder in the brutal assault of her seven-week-old son who was hospitalized last night with a broken leg, numerous broken ribs, a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. Some of the injuries appeared to be weeks old.

District Attorney Brown said, “The grave physical injuries that this helpless and defenseless infant was made to suffer in just the first few weeks of his life is beyond comprehension. Perhaps most shocking is that his own mother is the one accused of causing those injuries. The child is presently unresponsive and on life-support and, if he dies, charges will be upgraded.”

The District Attorney identified the defendant as Kiama Paez, 22, of 57-17 Xeena Street in Elmhurst. Paez is presently awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on various charges, including second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison.

District Attorney Brown said that, according to the charges, Paez brought her infant son, Pablo, to Elmhurst General Hospital Thursday night at approximately 9:45 p.m. At the time the child was unconscious and having difficulty breathing. It is alleged that when doctors examined the baby, they found that he had a broken leg, eight broken ribs, a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. The child was placed on life-support and has minimal brain activity.

The investigation was conducted by detectives assigned to the NYPD’s 110th Precinct detective squad.

Assistant District Attorney Mina Q. Malik, of the District Attorney’s Special Victims Bureau, is prosecuting the case under the supervision of Marjory D. Fisher, Bureau Chief, and Kenneth M. Appelbaum and Lucinda C. Suarez, Deputy Bureau Chiefs, and the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Charles A. Testagrossa and Deputy Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders.

It should be noted that criminal charges are merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
