Dems Must Unite
To The Editor:

Blood is in the air and with it is the possibility of the Democrats imploding. The White House, which seems to be in their reach, may fail to materialize as a result of the warfare Obama and Clinton are engaged in. One can clearly envision Republicans' operatives copying the virulent beatings the candidates are inflicting upon each other for TV commercials that will be played during the general election campaign.

The reality is that the Democratic race is even. Florida and Michigan would favor Clinton, as does Pennsylvania and some of the upcoming primary states. The popular vote totals and the delegates won by each are within margins that are amazingly close. The Republicans may not love McCain, but they will vote for their candidate to avoid losing the White House. It may be less likely that Democrats will be cohesive as a result of the battle tearing at the heart of the party.

It would be simple to have Clinton and Obama on one ticket. Dominance is the point of conflict between the two. Each has weaknesses that McCain will use to his advantage. The strength each has that qualifies them to be commander in chief is accepted by the faithful, but is diminished by their conflict.

The Super Delegates were established to act in the best interests of the Party. Being politicians, they have a reluctance to stand up and to take a position that may prove damaging for their own political future. It is time for courage to dominate petty selfishness. It is time for the Super Delegates to meet, debate and vote for either Clinton or Obama to head the ticket with the other acknowledged as the running mate. Their vote will eventually determine the presidential nominee. For the welfare of the Democratic Party and for those who oppose four more years of the Bush agenda, there is no other choice.
