On March 14 the Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens hosted an evening of 2008 Golden Gloves amateur boxing.

This year's Golden Gloves took place before a capacity crowd and represented the quarterfinal rounds. The event was one of many final groupings of bouts before the Golden Gloves moves to Madison Square Garden for the finals which will be held in April.

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall was honored in absentia, and former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. paid tribute to the borough president for her concern for the young people, families and community of Queens.
