Bryant Beats Newcomers In 1st 2008 Girls' Tennis Match

The William C. Bryant H.S. Lady Owls tennis team took to the courts in Astoria Park on Monday, March 17 to open the 2008 tennis season by vanquishing Newcomers H.S. The Lady Owls started the 2008 season the way they finished 2007- with a win, this one on the Newcomers H.S. home court. The 2007 season saw the Lady Owls amass a 12-win, 0-loss record and finish in second place to the H.S. of American Studies in the 2007 B Division championship match.

In the first of three singles matches, Lady Owl Michelle Lau, a senior, won over Jessica Becerra from Newcomers H.S. Match 2 saw Junior Alisa Jaganjac beat Wen I. Lin, and Junior Vanessa Enea Vargas beat Newcomers H.S. player Melissa Calle in Match 3.

Bryant Sophomores Marta Armatys and Ranjeet Kaur beat Karen Mallorca and Katarzyna Harasim in the first of two three-set doubles matches. In the second doubles match, Bryant Junior Aldiana Jacupovic and Senior Margherita Farruggio triumphed over Mary Robles and Tea Obrien from Newcomers H.S.

Coach Angel Salazar told us that he has the players to bring about a repeat of last season and make that last win to take the championship. Salazar sets high standards for his players, both on the court and off. Under his nofail policy, any player who fails just one course is benched until she brings her grade up.

The Lady Owls will meet the girls' tennis team from Frank Sinatra School of the Arts on the Bryant home courts this Thursday, March 20 at 4 p.m. The Sinatra girls' tennis team won their first match of the season over Robert F. Wagner H.S.
