Don't Leave Out Renters
To The Editor:

I am dismayed that both our governor and our mayor plan to cut such vital services as education, human resources or social services and even police hirings in order to reduce the property taxes and send rebate checks to homeowners. What happened to the renter who has to suffer rent increases? Of course, there is HEAP and SCRIE for those who meet the eligibility reaquirements, but what about those whose incomes are over the limit and who cannot make ends meet?

Also, I heard that the governor plans to give raises to New York state legislators. While they do good work and serve the public good and interest, the senior citizens, disabled and young people must be considered first.

The president's rebates and willingness to change Medicare and Social Security are along the same lines of not caring for the social needs of the most needy, seniors and disabled. In fact, nothing was mentioned about these particular groups in the primary campaigns. These people are voters. Too much name calling and debasement constitute the primary debates. Stick to the issues, I say. Cynthia Groopman Long Island City
