P.S. 205 Students Donate Food To McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House of Long Island President Robert S. Weitzner greeted P.S. 205, Bayside, Principal Susan Sherer and P.S. 205 PTA President Cathy Cahn as Sherer and Cahn dropped off boxes of food items P.S. 205 students collected for the families with the help of their parents.
The success of the New York Giants inspired 300 students from P.S. 205 in Bayside to have a "Souperbowl" event to collect boxes of canned goods for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The students, with help from staff and parents, wore New York Giants gear in a pre-game celebration on February 1. After collecting the non-perishable items through the assistance of parents and children at the school, Principal Susan Sherer and PTA President Cathy Cahn dropped off the donated food items at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

"Events like these teach young children the value of community service," Sherer said. "I am very proud of the effort that the students put forth to make this event a great success."

Cahn was able to organize this event in only one week. Her inspiration for coordinating the community service effort is a sick child from P.S. 205 who is currently undergoing medical treatment at Schneider Children's Hospital. Ryan Cahn, her seven year-old son who is also a student at P.S. 205, reads to the child at the hospital twice a week.

"We appreciate the consideration and generosity from the students and staff at P.S. 205," Robert S. Weitzner, president of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, said. "It's always great to be involved with such caring and thoughtful children."

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a home away from home for families who are caring for seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment in area hospitals. Located on the campus of Schneider Children's Hospital, the House accommodates families in a warm and supportive environment. Since opening in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island has served approximately 12,000 families from Long Island, throughout the United States and abroad.
