Editorial Valentine's Day is supposed to be the one day of the year when joy in one's significant other is unconfined. Both sexes rush about trying to make the day special and wonderful in any number of ways and by so doing prove the depth and extent of their affections. One would think that the mere act of trying to please the person one holds in most esteem would in, and of itself bring pleasure. Sadly, this often is not the case. Valentine's Day, according to a survey, is the holiday that brings about the most anxiety for people, men in particular (though we would surmise that there is more than a little anxiety on the part of women wondering what to do for that special someone as well). For too many of us, Valentine's Day has become an Olympiad with the gold medal going to whoever really goes over the top. Who wins the gold and for what is no business of ours. Our congratulations go to everyone who truly enjoys the day, because (or in spite of) the way the day was celebrated. We extend our best wishes for a Happy Valentine's Day to all. That said, we point out proudly that ours is possibly the best borough in New York City to plan a Valentine's Day celebration. This being the most diverse county in the United States, there is no shortage of different venues for dining, for example. If your romantic fancies lead you to seek Indian food, Jackson Heights is chockablock with restaurants serving almost every variety of Indian provender. Flushing is home to restaurants purveying Asian cuisine of all kinds. Astoria, of course, is the site of excellent Greek restaurants. Italian food is on offer all over the borough. Pick a country, any country, and the odds are more than good there's a restaurant offering that particular style of dining somewhere in Queens, without requiring an enormous amount of travel time to reach it or payment of a king's ransom to dine. The same rule applies to whatever sort of Valentine's Day gift one cares to give. From one end to the other, the borough has shopping street after shopping street lined with stores offering every conceivable sort of item that can be offered as a token of one's affection and esteem. While roses and chocolates, jewelry and perfume are popular, here in Queens, where diversity reigns, unusual and unique gift items can be found everywhere, all of them priced to fit every budget. The same holds true for other Valentine's Day activities. Couples can spend a romantic evening at any of the wide variety of entertainment venues to be found within this borough. Theater performances, concerts, museums, parks- all offer limitless opportunities to make Valentine's Day memorable, and with admission prices to suit any budget. Winter it may be, but Queens parks and the zoo still have a range of activities that appeal to the romantic within all of us. Just strolling hand in hand and people watching can fan the sparks of romance. Happy Valentine's Day to all our readers. May this day dedicated to creating and sustaining the best in human relationships bring lasting joy to everyone. |
