CitiField Subway Upgrade Started, But Won't Interfere With 08' Season
Crews working on CitiField hit a home run with Mets fans last month, by demolishing

the rundown and perpetually overcrowded rotunda

and walkway that connected Shea Stadium

with the No. 7 train. The connection was demolished

to make way for construction of the ramp to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, the main entrance

to CitiField, which is scheduled to open for the

Mets 2009 season. Team officials described the

Robinson Rotunda as one of the most unique aspects

of the new stadium, modeled after the entrance

to Ebbets Field the home of the former Brooklyn Dodgers. Faithful Mets fans need not fret over how they will access Shea Stadium from the No. 7 line for the 2008 season, team officials said. An MTA spokesperson said construction crews are working with agency engineers to build a temporary staircase on Roosevelt Avenue, adjacent to Shea Stadium. The interim staircase will be located close to the recently demolished walkway, and will include handicapped access to the stadium.
