Beg Pardon

The Helen Marshall State of the Borough story that appeared in the Jan. 9, 2008 Queens Gazette was written in advance, based on a draft of an incomplete speech and should not have been published until Jan. 16, 2008. We apologize for any inconvenience or problems this may have caused.

In "News Of The Neighborhoods" by Liz Goff in the January 2 issue of the Gazette, the item "Borden Avenue Veterans Shelter Reopens" contained a quote: "That's unheard of," said Deutsch. "We are asking anyone who has been so advised to contact us immediately," attributed to Eric Deutsch, Deputy Press Secretary, city Department of Homeless Services. Deutsch never made that statement.

DHS would have provided a response to the quote: "'That's nice. But what we really need are services and help to rebuild our lives,' several returning residents said", and the passage, "Many residents complained they were promised permanent housing when the shelter closed but never received help to find that housing. Others said they were advised they would have to pay to return to the shelter following renovations", if such a response had been requested.
