Boycott MTA On June 9

To The Editor:

I'd like to applaud Louis Kenny of Queens, who is reported to be organizing a grass-roots boycott of all MTA trains and buses on June 9, just when the fares are expected to go up. Louis Kenny said, "Let's show the MTA who's boss," and I totally concur. That reminds me of Rosa Parks and the actions taken on her behalf and others due to an injustice and brought the bus company to its knees during the civil rights movement.

We, the people, can do the same and make our voices truly heard. The MTA needs to think about this and that is there are a lot of people on fixed incomes like the elderly, handicap[ped] and the unemployed who will be seriously hurt by the fare increases and cutbacks. Maybe th[e]n our politicians and those who mismanaged funds and created this deficit will get the message that we will not stand for having our pockets picked any more. They just might find another way to get the funds for transportation which is the backbone of our city. Now on that day and every day there after, all those who can should walk, ride their bikes, car pool and do so with pride and conviction that we shall over-come this travesty. Let me also say this, "Power to the people!" Frederick R. Bedell Jr. Glen Oaks Village
