Martin Luther H.S. students and Walk A Thon Man raised more than $10,000 for school improvements during the school's annual Walk A Thon October 17. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents at Martin Luther H.S. put on their walking shoes and circled the block for the Maspeth school's annual Walk A Thon on October 17. They walked a combined total of more than 400 miles.

The walkers gathered pledges and contributions totaling more than $10,000 for improvements around their school building. The funds collected this year will be used to purchase and install a sound system in the school gymnasium and make other minor improvements in that space. This new equipment will benefit all students during weekly chapel services and assemblies, as well as improve the sound quality for drama productions put on in the gymnasium throughout the year.

In previous years, Walk A Thon funds raised have been used to install fans in the second and third floor classrooms, to purchase new desks, to paint classrooms and make other general improvements in the school which directly affect the student body.

Athletic Director James Regan was pleased with the enthusiasm and support of the students. "This is a great way to get the students involved with projects that ultimately make their educational experience more enjoyable," he said. "By participating in this way, the students take ownership in the project—they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their school."

Local businesses and friends of the school also lent their support to the event. Sponsors from the community included Academy Fire Protection, Maspeth; Gunral Service Center, Gunther Duy, ML '68; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Queens Alumni; Maspeth Federal Savings, Maspeth; Ridgewood Savings Bank; 69th Street Beverage Distributor, Maspeth; Blue Sky Landscaping, Howard Beach; Citation Fence Company; Michael J. Falco, Attorney at Law; the Herbrich Family; Laurel Manufacturing Co., Maspeth; the Renz Family; and Joseph Watson, ML '83. Frank's Deli in Maspeth also lent their support by donating hotdogs for the hungry walkers.

"We truly appreciate the support of our local vendors and members of the community for our Walk A Thon—and for all of the events we host here at Martin Luther High School," Director of Development Chris Brown said. "Their support is such an integral part of the improvements we have made to our physical facility and our academic and athletic programs over the years."
