SHAREing & CAREing To Hold 14th Benefit, Silent Auction
On Wednesday, November 19, SHAREing & CAREing, founded to serve breast cancer survivors on May 7, 1994 by Anna Kril, Carol Scarano, Lucille Hartmann and Mary Demakos, will hold its 14th annual benefit and fundraising silent auction from 7 to 10 p.m. at Riccardo's by the Bridge, 21-01 24th Ave., in Astoria. A hot and cold buffet and open bar will be featured.
Master of Ceremonies Joseph Pistilli, president, chief executive officer and chairman of First Central Savings Bank and chairman of the board of Pistilli Real Estate, will present awards and introduce the Guests of Honor for 2008, Basil Messados, Queens Medallion Brokerage Corporation president and CEO and Queens Medallion Brokerage Corporation Vice President Tony Georgiton. Bernard J. Biviano, M.D. F.A.C.S., F.C.C.P., director of peri-operative services and surgical critical care at the Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens and Joseph Masci, M.D., Elmhurst Hospital Center director of medicine, will receive the Physicians Recognition Award. Amelia d'Assuncao, M.A., R.N, NEA-BC, Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens director of nursing, and Joann Gull, R.N., Elmhurst Hospital Center chief nursing officer, will receive the SHAREing & CAREing Nursing Recognition Award. Frances Grace, publisher of Dish du Jour Magazine, Ltd., will receive the Community Recognition Award for 2008.
The award recipients join a distinguished group that started when SHAREing & CAREing first conferred awards in 1996. The 2007 awardee continent included Guests of Honor Leonard D'Amico and Peter Florey of D & F Development Group, LLC and Antonio Martin, Queens Hospital Center executive director, Physicians Recognition Award recipients were Tehillah Menes, M.D., chief, breast service, attending physician, Elmhurst Hospital Center Department of Surgery and assistant professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Department of Surgery; and Jeffrey Sandhaus, M.D., P.C., Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens. Community Recognition Award recipients were Philip l. Straub, First Central Savings Bank vice president, business development, and Judy Trilivas, R.N., M.A., Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens acting chief operating officer.
SHAREing & CAREing is a non-profit community-based organization in Queens that provides breast health outreach, education, support and advocacy services for medically under-served and uninsured women, including heightening awareness about the importance of early detection, breast self-examination and mammography screening and supports women diagnosed and treated for any cancer exclusive to women. Among the services that have been provided are transportation, pharmaceutical assistance and hair prosthetics, educational outreach to schools, churches and civic organizations and support group meetings.
SHAREing & CAREing is the only community nonprofit organization which provides grassroots support services to breast and ovarian cancer patients and their families through counseling, educational forums and advocacy services in Queens and throughout New York City. As advocates, SHAREing & CAREing seeks to dramatically improve medical services to all women through early detection, treatment and information about living with the effects of breast cancer regardless of economic stratum.
The founder and executive board members of SHAREing & CAREing are breast cancer survivors and first-generation Americans who are bilingual and represent the multi-ethnic fabric of communities in Queens. For more than 10 years, SHAREing & CAREing has partnered with local physicians and hospitals to offer health forums and mammography, screening, and provided unique counseling and culturally sensitive support services for women seeking information, and for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
