St. Michael's Dedicates First Responders Monument
      This Saturday, September 6, friends, families, loved ones and neighbors and fellow citizens of the New York City and Port Authority police and firefighters, will gather at St, Michael's Cemetery, East Elmhurst, as they have since 2002, to pay homage to the firefighters, and police who died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center of Sept. 11, 2001.

4 Queens PAL Centers 'Explore' Caribbean
      On August 13, more than 500 Police Athletic League PAL) children ages eight to 10 gathered at Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx to celebrate and learn about the cultures of the Caribbean Islands. The event was the culmination of a summer long study, "Exploring the Caribbean", by the youngsters from 15 PAL centers throughout the five boroughs.

      City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. has called upon Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown and his Manhattan counterpart, Robert Morgenthau, to take strong action against two Woodside residents who were recently arrested after they returned to the United States after fleeing to escape arrest on anti-graffiti charges.

2 More Floors Approved For New NYHQ Wing
      The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last week formally announced that New York Hospital Queens, located in Flushing, has received approval to add two floors to a five-story wing currently under construction. The hospital has now received all necessary federal, state and local approvals to amend its plan for a five-story wing by adding two floors.

'Lovely Lily' Film Revives 1964 Beatles Era
      Seven years in the making, "Lovely Lily", an independent feature film produced and directed by Jackson Heights resident Celeste Balducci, is complete and has been submitted to many film festivals both domestic and international. Balducci, along with a "cast of hundreds" from the Jackson Heights community appears in the 80-minute feature.

      Cops Heighten Mosque Security Police officials last week announced plans to increase security at mosques throughout Queens during observance of the Islamic holy days of Ramadan. Officials at precincts throughout the borough are sending more cops on foot patrol and in marked vehicles to keep an eye on activities at the mosques during the month-long observance.

YOUNG ANNOUNCES AFFORDABLE HOUSING LOCATIONS:
     Assemblymember Ellen Young of Flushing last week announced new affordable housing will be coming on the market soon. The lawmaker said she had secured a capital grant of $125,000 in Albany to purchase two buildings in Flushing that will be upgraded and made ready for occupancy. The buildings are located on Sanford Avenue and on Parsons Boulevard and contain a total of 60 units. The project is sponsored by Young and Asian Americans For Equality and is part of the Queens Affordable Housing Preservation Initiative. Young stated: "These two buildings are providing real, tangible solutions to the affordable housing crisis. By saving buildings from rent hikes and luxury development, we are giving our low-income tenants and working families a place to call home."
