New York Diner

49-09 Northern Blvd. Long Island City 718.626.8857
By Teresa Barile

Since 1949, this retro diner has occupied its humble home on Northern Blvd. at 47th Street. Now under new management, with some improvements made, New York Diner continues to serve up delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, seven days a week to hordes of steady customers.

The mornings buzz with activity as patrons pour into this tiny eatery while the skilled grill men beat, flip and serve over 1,000 eggs per day. The basic breakfast special costs just $2.75 and includes two eggs, any style, toast and their famous, golden home fried potatoes. You'll be served by the fast and courteous wait staff or you can have your order packed up to go or delivered to your home or place of business.

Try the "Big Breakfast" that will definitely keep you till way past  lunch with three eggs, bacon or ham or sausage, toast and coffee for just $5.95. Their legendary "Wake Up" omelet is made with three eggs, ham, bacon and chopped sausage mixed into the fluffy eggs ($5.25). Order a cheese omelet, and you'll be given a choice of cheeses including American, cheddar, mozzarella or Swiss. "The Booster" is an awesome pastrami omelet with toast and those fabulous home fries and coffee. One of the most popular breakfast sandwiches is called "The Heart Attack", and piles two eggs, bacon, cheese and potatoes on a jumbo hero roll for an amazing $3.95. That should keep you going until dinner! On the flip side, "The Petite" places two egg whites on whole wheat toast with grapefruit juice for just $3.50. All the breakfast specials come with freshly squeezed orange juice, made right in front of you in an ingenious machine.

Golden, crispy waffles are now available and can be ordered with apples, raisins, cinnamon and whipped cream, bananas, strawberries or blueberries. Try a stack of their fluffy pancakes, with real blueberries mixed in, topped with sweet, ripe banana slices and a cloud of whipped cream. They looked picture perfect as do the thick slices of golden French toast, served plain or topped with fruit. Breakfast is served all day so stop in anytime.

Each day, New York Diner prepares a list of lunch specials which are faxed to the many businesses in the area. A variety of entreés, including fresh fish and seafood, pork and beef appear in these specials which are generously portioned and reasonably priced. Baked pork chops are juicy and tender, served with potatoes, vegetable and soup or salad for just $7.95. Roast chicken and potatoes with mixed vegetables is another crowd pleaser ($7.45) or try the Cajun chicken sliced over crunchy garden salad. Healthy veggie burgers are served on pita bread with salad, and the Grecian chicken wrap is filled with tender marinated chicken with chunks of feta cheese, tomato and lettuce. New York Diner's juicy, 6-ounce all beef burgers are topped with anything from bacon, ham, fried onions and melted cheddar to chili or barbecue sauce. Ask for the "deluxe" and enjoy the crisp golden French fries, lettuce and tomato.

Keep it cool with fresh salads such as "Zorba The Greek", a generous Greek salad, loaded with tomatoes, olives, onions and feta cheese, topped with sliced, grilled chicken ($7.25). The Pulse Fitness salad tosses grilled chicken and sliced avocado over garden salad. Try one of their "celebrity" hero sandwiches, named after the local businesses that patronize them each day. For example, the "Major World" Hero piles grilled chicken breast, melted Swiss cheese, ham, honey mustard, lettuce and tomato on a jumbo roll ($6.25). The "Paragon Honda" features turkey and crisp bacon with melted Swiss cheese and honey mustard. The "Major Ford" hero layers hot roast beef with mozzarella, peppers and onions. House made soup of the day is a great accompaniment to these hefty sandwiches.
