St. John's Prep Baseball Team Wins CHSAA Title

In a 14-inning, four-hour CHSAA "B" championship game, a shot by St. John's Prep junior Noel Vargas allowed sophomore Mike Colon to score in the bottom of the 14th to give the Red Storm a 6-5 win over defending champions Cathedral Prep, who had defeated the Storm in last year's title game. Coach Jason Bigeni, the team and Prep fans present were thrilled to see the Prep win its first city title since 1987.

St. John's Prep was leading 4-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, when Cathedral tied the game. The Red Storm failed to score in the bottom of the seventh. Cathedral took the lead 5-4 in the top of the 12th and the Red Storm came back to tie it at 5 in the bottom of the 12th. The Red Storm prevailed in the bottom of the 14th to win the city championship. Daniel O'Brien pitched 11 and 2/3 innings and had 15 strikeouts for the Storm. He was relieved by Mike Zapata and then Noel Vargas.
