On Saturday April 5, City Councilmember Melinda Katz joined the leaders of the Forest Hills Youth Activities Association, the Forest Hills Little League, the American Legion and hundreds of young baseball players and their families to officially open the 2008 Little League season in Forest Hills. Under the guiding hands of the FHYAA, the Little League began its fifth decade of service to the youth of Forest Hills and surrounding communities. This year, the FHYAA will offer a summer instructional baseball camp at its Fleet Street fields in Forest Hills where youngsters can learn proper throwing mechanics, batting instruction, fielding technique, pitching mechanics and baseball conditioning.

With five baseball fields all well maintained under the watchful eye of Tom Brennan,  FHYAA vice president and head of the grounds crew, the season began with  a family party atmosphere. On hand to help celebrate the day was Abe Miller, who 50 years ago ignited the dreams to build a ball field for the youth of Forest Hills. Miller was instrumental in obtaining the land from the Long Island Rail Road to build what has now become a state-of-the-art baseball and soccer program for boys and girls in the community.

Katz, according to Brennan, has also been very supportive of the program, procuring thousands of dollars from the council budget. Only last year, her financial support helped the FHYAA to purchase a John Deere tractor to help maintain the fields. The fields have been upgraded since last season, including a new, tiered garden system that will help with drainage.
